Which Cars Are Best For Towing Caravans?

With caravanning becoming increasingly popular (especially in the modern plague era), we’re seeing an explosion in interest for car models with good towing capacity. People want vehicles that are going to serve them well as they tug their accommodation from one part of the country to another.

So which models are worth investigating?

Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery was almost made with towing in mind. This rugged off-road vehicle offers bags of torque and is designed to pull weights of up to three tonnes, making it suitable for even the largest of caravans and towable motorhomes.

Land Rover offers the Discovery with its Advanced Tow Assist System. This computer-aided tool sends specific instructions to the wheels, ensuring that they provide just the right amount of tug at the right time to prevent slipping or loss of traction. The vehicle is also incredibly quiet, making it an excellent choice for long trips.

The VW Tiguan is a powerhouse of a vehicle, able to tug even the biggest caravans with relative ease. VW suggests an upper tow limit of around 2305 kg, making it burly enough for pretty much anything you need to drag down dirt roads or onto campsites. It also features a towing assistant and comes with sliding and adjustable reclining rear seats.

The Ford Mondeo Estate

The Ford Mondeo might not have the popularity among motorists that it once did, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer useful for tugging vehicles. And because it’s an estate, you have more room in the back for unwieldy items, like skis.

Getting finance for the accompanying caravan or trailer is also relatively easy, according to Auto Finance Online. Interest rates are low across the board. The Mondeo also features a helpfully reinforced rig at the rear for towbar attachment.

Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is the Swedish car maker’s budget-orientated offroad, designed to flesh out its lineup and offer an alternative to the significantly more expensive XC60 and XC90.

The vehicle is a full-size, seven-seater SUV with ample space in the back for all your gear. And it’s a little unusual compared to many of the standard off-roaders out there. The looks are quintessentially Volvo, but it is also compact enough to use in urban environments too. It also comes with an excellent safety rating and the kind of high-quality interiors you would expect from a company like Volvo.

BMW 520d Touring

The BMW 520d Touring is the German manufacturer’s attempt to construct a vehicle that provides the optimal balance between towing practicality, space, comfort and style.

Perhaps the best feature of the vehicle is the push-button hill-starts. If you find yourself on a steep piece of road, you can get the car to roll forwards for you, without first having to fiddle around for the biting point. In case your caravan needs some repairs, we recommend to visit this Recommended site.

The main downside here is the price. BMW says that the 520d will start around £40,000 and if you want the 530d version, you’ll need to pay at least another 25 per cent on top of that.
