Surprising Ways to Improve Your Maths Skills

March 31, 2017 1:54 pm

Maths is a nightmare for many people. They hated it at school and so struggle to get along with even everyday maths as an adult. Everything in you says that maths is boring, and maybe that you can’t do it. But improving your maths skills can be beneficial in a number of ways. If you want to get better at maths, you don’t have to go back to school (although there are adult numeracy classes available). Try one of these methods to get better at numbers.

Add Up Purchases as You Shop

Everyone has to go shopping sometimes. If you do it online, it will get added up for you as you shop. But when you’re out in the real world, why not practise your mental maths skills? Add up your purchases as you put them in your basket or trolley and see how accurate you were when you get to the till.

Manage a Budget

Managing a household budget is an essential skill in adulthood. It helps you to make sure your money is working as hard as it can. Cutting down on expenses, creating a savings plan, and even looking at investments can help you use your maths skills in various ways.

Play Games

There are lots of games that can help you flex your maths muscles. Board games like Monopoly can help, and so can card games with the kids. Or if you would rather do something more high-tech, you can find online games and smartphone apps.

Start Betting

For a slightly more adult way to improve your thinking with numbers, betting on sports and other events can be fun. You need knowledge of how odds work and how to work out what your potential winnings could be.
