Dressed for the Occasion: the Importance of Appearances in Your Business

February 17, 2017 4:32 pm

Imagine walking into a law firm to get advice for your recent injury accident at work, only to be greeted by someone wearing baggy jeans, a shirt with profanity all over it, and a cap worn backwards. Not only that, but they’re chewing gum, they have their feet up on the desk, and they’re chatting on the phone. As soon as they see you entering the premises, they don’t think to remove their feet from their desk or put away their phone. Instead, they’ll happily chat away until you approach them.

In times like this, you’re probably better off turning around and finding another law firm. Appearances and attitude matter when it comes to running a successful business. If you want to be treated well in the workplace, then your only real option is to look the part. You need to press appropriately, have the right look on your face, and be approachable (or unapproachable if you work in security).

Dress for work

Not only is dressing appropriately important due to appearances, it’s almost important because you want to be safe while you work. For instance, if you work at night then you need to look for workwear suppliers that can supply you with high-visibility vests and flashlights. If you’re going to be working in a kitchen, then you need to wear clothes are you don’t mind getting dirty and are easy to wash because splashes and accidents can happen. Make sure that you and your employees are wearing the correct apparel for work because it makes a world of difference to not only your profits but also to your safety and peace of mind.

Dress to impress

When you need to impress someone, nothing says “look at me!” like a fancy suit and a nice pair of shoes. You have to dress to impress if you are making public appearances. For instance, if you plan to attend a trade show, if you have an upcoming meeting or if you’re running an exhibition that showcases your product. If you want to network with industry figureheads and veterans, then you need to look the part and have a smart outward appearance that puts their mind at ease. You don’t want to approach someone important wearing casual clothing like a hoodie because you’re going to look like you want to rob them more than you want to talk to them.

Dress for confidence

Confidence is key when it comes to making yourself stand out. It also gives you the power to make decisions and speak to others without hesitation. Sometimes, people need some form of motivation to get their confidence, and wearing a smart suit or something that represents your brand can be enough to give you a boost of confidence to make a sale or network with someone important. If you have to make important decisions or attend a meeting that might make or break a deal, then wear something that boosts your confidence and gives you the willpower you need to reach for success.
